Epilepsy is an neurological disorder causing brain seizures. Young children and older people are more prone to develop this condition, however it can occur in persons of any age. More than 40 types of epileptic seizures are known to exist and each type is characterized by its own EEG findings and treatment.

It is estimated that around 200,000 people in Australia have this neurological condition causing epileptic seizures. A stigma still exist in today’s society about this medical disorder and there is a need for more information and education about epilepsy.
The impact of epilepsy is reflected in anxiety, depression, mood disorders as well as affecting participation in social activities, education and sport.

Many affected people are experiencing one or more of following social impacts:
- Discrimination at work place or at educational institutions.
- Poor access to specialist in rural and regional areas.
- Can not drive their own car due to suspended license.
- Avoid public transport in fear of having a seizure in public place.
- Increased cost of transport.

For proper diagnosis epileptic seizures must be spontaneous, however “triggers” such as flashing lights, hyperventilation, sleep deprivation, sleep itself, emotional stress and heat stress may be used to help diagnosis procedure.

Usual treatment for epilepsy is medication. Surgery is used in extreme cases where medicating is ineffective. It is important to diagnose the exact type of seizures (generalized and partial seizures) before deciding on the type of treatment for this neurological condition.
